SOUND CARD GROUPS

Begin with Group 1 to assess. Write a sound on one side of an index card with an example on the back side. Practice saying the sounds quickly, every day for 20 days. Then, go on to the next group. Keep a progress monitoring chart. If you have trouble progressing through these groups, you likely need extra reading help.

LONG VOWEL MNEMONIC SENTENCES

Here are some silly sentences to memorize, so you can remember all the vowel teams and diphthongs that make each long vowel sound. Draw a picture for each sentence. Then, create a table chart for each sentence. Write the sentence at the top and make columns for each letter team (a a_e ai ay eigh ea ei ey). Below each letter team, make a column of words. For example, under ai, you could write rain, sail, main, brain, frail, etc. and highlight the letter teams.

Long A: By a vacant lake on a rainy day, eight animals had great fun with their prey.

Long E: Eva needs meat and candy for these shrieking monkeys on the studio ceiling.

Long I: "The pilot likes to fly at night free-style," said the magpie.

Long O: Go home on a slow boat, Joe.

Long U: Rudy's mood was rude and youthful, but a new suit from Zeuz may help.

and Cupid is cute in pewter, and will not argue or feud.

or

Rudy's mood was rude and youthful, but with a new suit, he won't argue or feud.

That's right! Long u makes 2 sounds, /oo/ like tune and /ew/ like few. For some people, it doesn't make much difference. That's why I combined the sentences into 1 sentence. oo and ou are the only letter combinations that do not make the /ew/ sound.
